What happened

The Federal Reserve released its 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances. Between the 2022 and 2025 surveys, inflation-adjusted median U.S. family net worth increased 2%. The share of families with debt payments above 40% of income also rose, from 6.5% to 8.6%.

The educational context

Net worth measures assets minus debts; cash flow measures the ability to cover ongoing costs. A household can own appreciating assets while facing tighter monthly finances. Survey averages do not describe every family.

Keep in perspective

These are U.S. survey findings for 2022–2025, published in October 2026, rather than a real-time measure of all households.
